Does anyone know the process to become a host parent for a foreign exchange student?

Or you can google for other organisations that have exchange programs. Usually you%26#039;ll have to fill out some forms, be interviewed by the organisation and attend a (few) meeting(s) to learn about what hosting is all about. You%26#039;ll probably have to prove that you%26#039;re financially capable of feeding the exchange student for a year and show that you have a place for him/her to sleep (can be in the same bedroom as one of your own kids). Hosting won%26#039;t cost you much money but likely some.
I was an exchange student with AFS in Thailand for a year, and the year after that my parents hosted a Chinese boy for a while because the family that was supposed to host him couldn%26#039;t due to some health issues that suddenly came up. I%26#039;m Dutch and the requirements to host are slightly different per country though. Being an exchange student and hosting are both really interesting experiences but not necessarily easy (cultural %26amp; language problems can suck): I changed host families twice while in Thailand (I was in a region where no-one spoke English, including the highschool English teachers, ahem).

Other Replys:The Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students is a good place to start. First, check with your high school to see if the high school has any room for another student. A high school does not have to accept a student if it is detrimental to the local students (crowding, budget concerns) and it is illegal to bring a student into the USA if a school has not given written permission that the student has been accepted. Also, you need special permission from the U.S. Department of State to host two students and you cannot host more than two. Watch out for placement agencies that do hasty last minute placements. If you cannot have some time to communicate with the student to see if the student can speak sufficient English etc -- that is not good.
